Appreciation Week Featured Teacher: Ms. Sara Davies

by Bloomz, on May 8, 2015 10:01:59 AM

This is our fifth and last installment in a special series of articles we prepared for Teacher Appreciation Week, recognizing amazing educators who make a difference in the life of students.  Feedback has been really good for our series of featured teachers, so we'll continue with this effort in the future, in a different cadence, so stay tuned.  Please keep sending your suggestions and stories you want to share, by emailing us at:

In my opinion, there is a special place in heaven reserved for Toddler teachers.  They are the most patient, kind, patient, empathetic, patient, (did I say patient?) educators I have ever had the pleasure of working with.  It is a job I could not do.  Toddlers definitely are not my age group.  I know this because- I have one!  So, on this last day of teacher appreciation week, I would like to raise my figurative glass to my son Brennan’s Teacher Ms. Sara!  Thank you for all that you do every day for my son and his classmates.  You astound me with the love and appreciation you have for your students…

  1. Why did you choose to become a teacher?

I always wanted to be a teacher. I really wanted to make a difference in other people’s lives.  Going from teaching high school (when students are at the end of their schooling) to the complete opposite end- teaching children at the beginning, has been truly amazing!  With toddlers you just have to have fun.

  1. What is the most satisfying teaching moment and/or a funny classroom story?

My rain boots had holes in them… My kids were so concerned about my feet getting wet.  They kept saying to me- “your boots are broken, your boots are broken….”  Those boots are long gone, but the kids still ask every time it rains if my boots are still broken.

  1. What is your greatest advice to parents?

Make sure you listen.  Get down to their level and always acknowledge them so that they feel validated, heard and respected.

  1. What do you like most about teaching this age group?

That you get to see them learn new things all the time.  They are so eager and honest.  There is always something new in my day and theirs.

  1. Your suggestions to other aspiring teachers?

Have LOTS of patience.  Be creative with your planning and approach and always be in the moment.  Adaptability is key.

Sara Davies holds an AMS Infant Toddler Montessori teaching certificate.  She has been teaching for 7 years and has taught High School at a residential boys school on the East Coast, as well as toddlers on-and-off since college.
