Bloomz Teacher of the Week- Katherine Stewart

by Bloomz, on Nov 6, 2015 1:55:29 AM

    1. Why did you become a teacher?

I am passionate about growing food and changing our current food industry into something more sustainable.  I realized that as adults it is much more difficult to change a behavior. But the children of this beautiful planet could be taught to appreciate nature and  gardening from an early age, and that influence and perspective could maybe provide the future with a bit more understanding of sustainable food and healthy eating. After all if you grow it, care for it and then prepare your own food, you are much more likely to actually eat it!

    2. What is your greatest teaching moment?

I'm not sure I can pick one moment but my favorite part of gardening with children is when they refuse to try a veggie, then decide to and LOVE it! Things taste different in the garden, eating a carrot that has been plucked from the garden and eaten right away is a sweet treat that you will not find on the shelf of a grocery store.

    3. Do you have a funny story to share?

We found a caterpillar in the garden the other day, a very tiny adorable child screamed with excitement "Miss Katherine, its a cat-a-pillow" it made my day.

    4. What is your advice to parents?

Plant something, anything with your kids. Seeing the transformation from seed to plant to fruit back to seed is an amazing experience for kids AND adults.

    5. What is your advice for teachers who are just starting out?

I think my favorite advice that I have received is to have a "back pocket plan". Many a time I have had a plan in mind for our gardening time, then when we are in the moment something has come up and that plan will no longer work. Being able to quickly transition to a back up plan that keeps everyone focused is quite helpful.

    6. What is your favorite children’s book?

Anne of Green Gables of course! Perhaps I'll start rereading yet again tonight.

    7. What do you like best about Bloomz?

Bloomz is an excellent tool for easy picture sharing and with so many precious moments I am glad parents have a chance to share this experience.

Katherine’s journey to teaching began almost a decade ago after earning her degree in Apparel Design. During a postion on the Design team at Nordstrom, Katherine asked herself “Where does our food come from and what is all this ‘organic’ about?” That single question led her to seek out an internship at a farm in Tacoma where she discovered her true passion for growing food and creating social change. Katherine, who has been with Montessori Children's House (MCH) since 2011, loves combining her knowledge of growing food with education for a chance at a more sustainable future. Her favorite part about being at MCH is seeing the children’s joy and enthusiasm found in the garden. When not in the garden, Katherine owns her own farm, Peaceful Harvest in Carnation, and enjoys cooking, sewing and reading.
